This was recommended by Bob Hosie as having excellent views over Edinburgh. The grounds around it are also a nature reserve. There is a driveable road to the Observatory with Parking, although to get to the summit there is a short steepish walk on an asphalt surface. When checking this out we were unfortunately caught up in torrential rain with no rain gear and it was blowing a hoolie, so we had to turn back off this path. As the festival is still in progress and if people wanted to stay late, this might be an opportunity for firework photos. There will be more details in the Darkroom nearer the time.

John and I revisited the Observatory to make sure of access particularly for a mobility scooter. As you approach the observatory by car there is parking in front, however this appears to be for Staff. However in the evening and with a mobility card it may be possible to park here. The most accessible path up from here is to the right of the building as you approach the observatory. This path is part tarred and part hard packed track,  it is a gradual but steepish climb to the base of the viewpoint. However there are viewing seats and from this area there are pretty good views over Edinburgh and to North Berwick Law. However to get to the viepoint and Trig point its a steepish 10-15 min climb up. This affords a 360 degree view over Edinburgh and the surrounding area.

There is another car park for visitors to the left of the observatory with a steepish tarred path, this allows a completely different aspect but when the tarred path runs out it is not suitable for a mobility scooter, it is a shortish, steepish scramble up narrow tracks to the top point.

For those younger and fitter it is possible to circumnavigate the trig point and return to the carparks.
